How Do Birth Control Pills Help Acne?

There are several factors responsible for the development of the acne and some of them can be listed as hormonal changes, sticky skin cells that block the follicles of the hair and the bacteria. The primary hormone testosterone which is the androgen or male sex hormone is responsible in the development of the acne thereby increasing the production of natural oil known as sebum from the hair follicles.

The amount of testosterone level is much higher in men; women to produce a less amount of it.  Consumption of birth control pills is the most effective way by which the women can control the acne. Acne can be prevented by blocking the production of testosterone. The estrogen contained in the birth control pills helps the body in increasing the sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) which is a protein that binds and soaks the testosterone. Increase in the amount of SHBG helps in lowering the testosterone thereby preventing the acne. Some birth control pills contain anti-androgen components in addition to the increased amount of SHBG.

Drospirenone present in birth control pills binds with the androgen receptors present in the body thereby causing blockage of the testosterone. Select only those oral contraceptives pills that are approved by FDA for improving acne.
